People have different opinions about the gender pay gap, so we decided to ask the LifePoints community what they think about it. We asked the LifePoints community five questions, and they did not disappoint. For instance, are there enough women leaders in the society, what opportunities are there for women and has society made positive progress in recent years in terms of gender pay gap?

What is the gender pay gap?

The gender pay gap is the difference between what the average man makes compared to the women in India. It’s a complex issue, but the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) defines the gender pay gap as “a measure of pay disparity between men and women.”

 

How is the gender pay gap calculated

Calculating the gender pay gap is a simple process. It involves lining up all salaries of every man in India to find the middle salary. This is repeated for to find the middle salary for women and the 2 numbers are compared. In India, it is measured as a percentage, and women earn 73% of what men earn.

 

What is the equal pay act?

The Equal Remuneration Act of 1976 requires that companies pay men and women the same amount of money for performing the same job.

 

What is meant by equal pay for equal work?

Equal pay for equal work means that people receive the same pay for the same job, regardless of their gender or other characteristics.

 

5 surprising statistics that show how people view the gender pay gap

LifePoints community members were asked what they think about the gender pay gap, and over 600 people shared their opinion. Here’s what they think:

 

Fewer women believe that both genders have equal career opportunities

The first question LifePoints community answered was if the career opportunities are the same for everyone. Fewer women thought the same career opportunities were available with 53.9% of women agreeing. When men were asked the same question 53.9% agreed the same opportunities were available.

People are undecided on if some jobs are made for women and some are made for men

The question that split the LifePoints community was whether some jobs are designed for different genders. 40.7% of people said some jobs were made for different genders. 28.6% of people said jobs weren’t made for either gender, and 30.7% of people said some jobs were made for different genders.

Two-thirds of people agree that men and women are paid equally for doing the same job

The next question the community answered was if men and women are paid equally for the same work. 67% of people agreed and said men and women are paid the same.

LifePoints community thinks there should be more female leaders

Overall, the LifePoints community believed that there aren’t enough women leaders in the world, but it was very close with 52% of people saying there aren’t enough women in senior positions.

The most common sentiment among the LifePoints community was that society has progressed towards gender equality in the last decade.

3 successful women to celebrate

We still face challenges in closing the gender pay gap, and there’s a long way to go.  So now is a great chance to celebrate the achievements of some of India’s best female leaders. From media stars to businesswomen, these women have achieved a lot in their careers.

 

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is an Indian businesswoman who founded Biocon, one of India’s biggest biotech companies. During her time at Biocon, the company launched the world's first oral insulin product and started the Biocon Academy to provide biotechnology education to students, among other achievements. For her work, Kiran won the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan, two of the highest honours to get in India.

 

Shabana Azmi

Shabana Azmi is an Indian actress and activist, who has won a range of rewards for her contributions to cinema and society. One of these awards is Best Actress at the National Film Awards for her performance in "Ankur." Like Kiran, Shabana Azmi has also been awarded the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards for her contributions to the arts and women’s rights activism.

 

Indra Nooyi

Idra Nooyi is another Indian businesswoman who has been very successful and is best known for being CEO of PepsiCo for over a decade. During her time at PepsiCo, she helped the company focus on healthier options, including the "Performance with Purpose" initiative. This initiative made PepsiCo’s products healthier and more environmentally sustainable. Forbes named Idra one of the 'World's 100 Most Powerful Women' for her work.
